| | The raging otter « Thread Started on May 30, 2010, 12:40pm » | |
It was a ordinary morning. Its was a heavy frost and the trees showed the heaviness of the frost as they glistened with the heavy frost in there limbs. The air was still the morning chirps of the birds forging for there morning feed was as loud as any gun shot. The smell in the air was as clean as any spring morning. The anticipation of the morning check was as strong as the first time i ever checked a trap.
As i had lay ed in some very nice water sets the day before. I had made them in a fresh sand bar that had been left from the recent floods that had receded. And when i was working the upper banks had noticed a lot of otter sign along this bar. So i climbed over the bank and slid down and set 3 sets in along the sand bar. The smells coming from the sand was one of a very heavy and dense smell of musk.
Its a sure sign of otter using the sight as a meeting place. As i climbed back up the bank i was chuckling to myself at just how easy this was going to be. As i was all ready anticipating the line check of today! Little did i know what mother nature had in store for me!!
As i climbed into the truck to head down to the creek to check my water sets. Thoughts that ran through my mind about how i wanted the water sets to be. Also about what i wanted them to hold.
As i climbed out of the truck. I grabbed my remake basket and unannounced to me at the time. I had left my little 22 pistol in the front seat of the truck. Well on ward and upward i made my way to the sets i had made. First checking my raccoon sets and coyote sets along the fields above the stream. With no events to speak of.
I was beginning to feel apprehensive about my water sets as it seemed to me that nothing had run the night before. So as i approached the bank upon which i had to climb down. But upon my approach i noticed i could here my chain on my trap being yanked and pulled. Then the roar of a animal i hadn't heard until then. After gathering what nerves i had left in me i peered over the bank and to my surprise there was a full grown otter male setting in my trap. He was now fully aware of my presence and was starring at me with the most vicious glare he could muster. He was gnashing his teeth and pulling on the trap with all the might he had!!!
But as for me i was so excited that i forgot some of the most basic survival techniques that we as trappers need to take into consideration before we make the plunge into retrieving our prize. Most notable is the point of is the animal held tightly enough to warrant a closer observation!! Second being is our pistol loaded and ready for business. Well!!!
After not doing these things i steeped over the bank and proceeded to slid down to my catch. But unannounced to me was he was only held by one toe! Which i didn't pay any attention to! Well let me tell you he was not very happy with me. What i did notice and started to take some concern with was the fact that he wasn't backing away from me! Now this was giving me enough concern as i started looking for my pistol! To late no more than i reached in pocket for the pistol did i realize i was in a world of hurt as it wasn't there and the otter had made a final plunge in my direction and had freed itself from the trap!
The words oh sh^%$%$# come to mind. It was to late he was all ready chewing at my ankles and was digging his claws into my legs as he was climbing me like a tree. The hoots and hollers i was making wasn't working to free my self. Over to the ground i went with otter in tow on my back as i was franticly trying to free myself from his ever serious attempts to chew me to pieces. We fought tooth and nail for some time i would free myself from him and try to make a get away with him in tow again.
Ever time i tried to climbed the bank he was on me again. I finally found a piece of wood that i could wail on him with. That was his mistake. Well to make a long story short i sold him to my local fur buyer for 125.00 And i enjoyed ever dollar of that one by buying bigger and better holding traps! LOL
So there you have it the rest of the story that so many have wanted to hear! I hope you guys enjoyed it and may learn something from it!!!!!!
