Looking at some Victor #2 longsprings and #1 1/2s-I don't trust the chains. They are rusted and pitted and may break. What would be wrong with replacing them with 1/8th" AC cable???? Make them center-pull from the base? The duke conibears are like that. Coon traps that may have to hold a bobcat....

hey...I'll answer my own post! I went to lunch and thought about it. No good for a hole set as you would not have the option of coiling up your chain. The cable wont hide good. I think it would be ok on rat traps underwater. The CMT conibeaars come new with cable but that different than foothold sets....

I am going to try cable on a few footholds this fall. Won't know if it works unless I try it myself. I can always put chains back on.

Tryed it last year. You are absolutly correct, great in the water, not so much in the dirt.

okay for water, but i'd sure hesitate putting them on landsets. like you said, they'd be a pain getting the covered up with the dirt.
i've got most of my bodygrips "cabled". no problems with them on this issue.

The trouble with cable is the kinking and burrs.I too use them on my conibears and make sure I put a swivel on them.Had an otter get caught this past winter that somehow managed to stay alive in a 220,had I just wired the trap I sure he would have taken off with the trap.He had that cable wrapped as tight as you could get it around the trap and himself, hence the swivel to minimise that.
